Title: Shchedryk – based on the original Ukrainian folk song celebrating the New Year – a Public Domain arrangement
Composer Notes & Lyrics:
This arrangement was originally written for Jazz Ensemble with its’ descending melodic motif and jazz harmonies. The lyrics speak to New Year’s and the promise we attribute to this time of renewal.
SHCHEDRYK LYRICS:
Ring – a New Year, a New Year, a New Year
In this new year, consider your days
Those you hold dear, the heart of your gaze
Keep your mind clear, shake off the pop craze
Seize this day
Think of your friends, and time that’s well spent
Pass those dead-ends, advance with intent
Make you’re a-mends, learn to be content
Seize this day
Mindfulness – ring – stay present
Decompress – ring – reinvent
Luminesce – ring – prescient
Stay grateful, be mindful, stay thankful
View the awe – ring – see the good
Feel the draw – ring – hardihood
Check your yaw – ring – brotherhood
Be joyful, stay soulful, and hopeful
Be peaceful, stay graceful, and truthful
So, if you’re focused on what you don’t have compared to others
Take another look and see, truly see what you have
Celebrate your strengths and wisdom
Remember, this is your journey
We always want more everything and it’s never satisfying
Money only buys what’s temporary, here and now, solving nothing
Yet, we still look all around, wondering if this is enough?
Let it teach you what you value, look to see through, figure what’s true
Celebrate with others, celebrate what you appraise in yourself
Who you were and how you’ve grown, looking to your future self
New year, becoming, emerging
New year, reasoning, revealing
New year, practicing, prevailing
Brain-storming – designing – unflinching – unswerving
Sing – sing – sing – sing
New year, becoming, emerging
New year, reasoning, revealing
New year, practicing, prevailing
Brain-storming, designing, unflinching, unswerving
Sing – sing – sing – sing
Break your loop, incepting, adapting, embracing
And re-group, reshaping, accepting, recharging
Alley-oop, unbending, persisting, flourishing
Refreshing, arranging, embarking
Sing – consistent, proficient, competent, eloquent
Steal the time, diligent, resilient, ebullient
Redesign, assessing, visioning, creating
Realign, advancing, achieving, mastering
Sing – believing, attaining, becoming, inspiring
Consistent, proficient, competent, eloquent, confident
Ring – a New Year, a New Year, a New Year
